Nurses Earn CE Units

Ensenada, BC, Mexico – January 2, 2006 - The growing number of Latino immigrants admitted to US hospitals has prompted health care professionals to head to Mexico. They are venturing south of the border to enroll in the Medical Spanish Program at the Baja California Language College in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico where they learn how to interact – in Spanish- with their patients.

The Medical Spanish Program in Ensenada focuses on calming and comforting patients, acquiring admission data, reviewing medical histories and clarifying patient symptoms. Students also learn to identify body parts and how to communicate during examinations.

"An emergency room can be an intimidating place for a non-English speaking patient," explains Deb Hendricks, ER nurse at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and program alumnus. "Just being able to initiate a dialog in Spanish helps to earn the patient’s trust and creates a more relaxed and reliable information exchange."

The California Board of Registered Nurses recognizes the Baja California Language College as a Certified Continuing Education Provider. All nurses who complete a one week Medical Spanish program will earn 30 CE Units.

The Ensenada course is featured every week in March and October 2006. Courses are offered for students at all levels of proficiency from the absolute beginner to the advanced Spanish speaker. Students are not limited to only a one week program. They may enroll in the Medical Spanish Program for an entire month.

The Baja California Language College founder and president Keith Rolle adds, "A big reason the success rate is so high is that the health care professional is totally immersed in a Spanish speaking environment here in Ensenada. They get into role-playing activities that are entirely in Spanish." Students are also housed with Mexican host families during their study to complete the Spanish immersion process.

Ensenada is only 70 miles south of downtown San Diego and is easily accessible by personal car or public transportation.
